Eid Mubarak! Welcome Eid! Thus marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observed by Muslims worldwide. The month is not just about abstaining from food and drink from dawn till dusk but it serves as a time for reflection and community. It is a time to emphasize the value of having empathy and compassion for others less fortunate and to appreciate your family and community.

Over the past month each day they would break their fast with an evening meal called ‘iftar’. A special table is prepared with a variety of Moroccan breads, fruits, tagine, eggs, soup, sweets etc. The actual food will vary by region but it is customary to start with eating dates and water. After that the harira soup is always served first, which is like a hearty tomato soup. Definitely hot in this weather but nonetheless still delicious (working on introducing the idea of grilled cheese). Everyone gets together and celebrates with food and entertainment throughout the night. This culminates during the last day called Eid and a huge celebration happens for multiple days.

Just a little peak at the types of food served:

On the last weekend of Ramadan all the volunteers in my region decided to celebrate together. Here are some of the pictures of our American/Moroccan spread:
