Finally made it to Chiang Mai University! After what seemed like a millennium of time passing, in reality like three days, we are settled in to our new apartments. The first flight from Boston to Frankfurt was delayed three hours so we didn’t make it out till 12:45 am Friday morning. This in hindsight wasn’t that bad because it meant less time stuck in the Frankfurt airport. Once we finished our long layover we got on our Frankfurt to Bangkok flight which turned out to be 10 and half hours. Through the two main flights I did get to watch a plethora of movies such as Beasts of the Southern Wild, Oz, Parker, and Les Miserable along with some junk TV episodes, but hey they were long flights.
Even though I have traveled several times and never gotten airsick it surprised me when this whole trip I felt nothing but nausea and dizziness. If you have ever ridden a roller coaster the knot in my stomach felt remarkable similar to the feeling you get as you sit in the rickety car trudging its way up the tracks only to be dropped a preposterous amount of feet in the air. It was mainly bad during landing. However I did survive but it seems that my body does not bounce back as quick as it did when I was a youngling’.
We had our first Thai meal from a street vendor for 25 Baht! So less than an American dollar. We just have to make sure not to drink tap water. Then we got fresh fruit ( I tried dragon fruit, I have had it as a flavor in a drink but never fresh) from a stand right down from the college and stopped by the seven eleven right before our apartment building. It feels very bizarre to be here. It still seems like just some far off dream that I am watching. I have to remind myself that for the next two months this is my home. For now though my somewhat stiff bed beckons my weary and well-traveled body to its comforts. After sleeping on airplane seats for days even a straw mat seems appealing as long as it is horizontal… but that experience will come soon enough!
